Remember the story of the Tower of Babel in the Book of Genesis 11:1-9. In their pride, people came together, speaking one language, and sought to build a tower to the heavens to make a name for themselves. But because their ambition was born of rebellion against God, He brought confusion, and their shared language was lost.

Truly, imagine a world where everyone spoke the same language, where every word was understood without a translator. This wasn’t a fantasy; it was once a reality. “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.” Genesis‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬ Eventually, humans became stronger and wiser, ‘’The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.’’ Genesis 11:6  In the beginning, God designed a world of perfect unity, where all of humanity communicated with a common speech. This was meant to make life simple, just as His initial plan was for us to live in His presence in the Garden of Eden. ‘’Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.’’ -Genesis 2:15

But sin disrupted this perfect plan because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit God has commanded them not to eat. ‘’therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.’’ Genesis 3:23-24 Just as Adam and Eve’s rebellion led to their exile from the garden, the people of Babel’s pride led to their division. They used their shared language and unity to rebel against God, believing their collective power made them invincible. This act of arrogance led to a divine consequence: God confused their language, scattering them and creating the thousands of languages we have today. ‘’Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.’’ Genesis 11:7-8

This story holds a powerful lesson. When we use our shared strengths—our unity, our skills, and our understanding—for our own pride and ambition rather than for God’s purposes, we invite division and confusion. True unity and power come not from our own collective might, but from our alignment with God’s will.

This ancient story also holds a powerful truth: nothing can be accomplished without God’s permission. Our greatest plans, our most ambitious projects, and our unified efforts can only succeed when they are in alignment with His will. When we submit our plans to Him and work with a loyal and humble heart, our efforts are blessed. But when we build in rebellion, even our best-laid plans can fall into confusion.

Let this be a reminder to align your heart and your work with God’s purpose. True success isn’t about making a name for yourself, but about honoring the One who gives all things their meaning. 

A call to unity: even after the division at Babel, God’s desire for us remains unchanged. He yearns for us to live together in unity and love. As Psalm 33:1 says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” This is more than a suggestion; it’s a blueprint for a blessed life. When we put aside our differences and come together in harmony, we create a space for God’s goodness to flourish. True joy and peace are found not in isolation, but in a shared community built on love. 

Prayer: 

Dear Lord, the God of all flesh, glorious and excellent is Your name throughout the earth. Just as in ages past, we have continued to sin and rebel against Your law and commandments. We have trespassed and done much evil in Your sight. God, will You not temper justice with mercy? Will You condemn us forever for our disobedience? Remember Your promise never to leave or forsake us, that You will be with us until the very end of the age. Plead our cause, Lord, and have mercy and compassion upon all who dwell on earth. We are Your sons and daughters, created in Your image. We weep for our sins and cry out to heaven that You may hear our plea and our heart’s cry. Lord, forgive. Lord, have mercy. Lord, You are compassionate; remember Your love of old, for You loved us first, and Your love is greater than our iniquities. Lord Jesus, return us to unity with the Father’s love. As the great Mediator, intercede for us and wash away our sins with the precious blood of the Lamb. Thank You, Father, God of heaven, for pardoning and forgiving all our sins, now and forever. Amen.

‘’If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.’’ 2 Chronicles 7:14
