Day 1:  A Life Redefined (Who Was Jabez?)

What was the story of Jabez? Can you tell who Jabez was? In the lineage of Judah, a man named Jabez was born, his parents unnamed in the ancient text, in the Book of ‭‭I Chronicles‬ ‭4‬. His story, however, begins with a single, poignant detail from his mother. She named him “Jabez,” which means “pain,” for she bore him in great sorrow and hardship. Perhaps it was a time of poverty, sickness, or war—a season of deep agony that marked his very beginning.

Yet, despite this painful start, Jabez grew to be more honorable than all his brothers. He was a man of integrity and noble character, devoted to God with a passionate heart. He feared the Lord and lived a life that reflected his deep faith, even though his name seemed to be a constant reminder of suffering.

Jabez knew his God intimately, and this knowledge gave him courage. One day, he cried out to the God of Israel with a powerful prayer. He asked for blessings, for protection, and for God to be with him. And in a remarkable display of mercy and lovingkindness, God heard and answered him. The prayer of Jabez became a turning point, transforming a life defined by pain into one overflowing with honor and divine favor.

Your name may not be Jabez, but that doesn’t mean your story is without purpose. Maybe your name is Stephen or Steven, a name that means “crown” or “royalty,” symbolizing victory and honor. Yet, you might be facing a tough and challenging time—a storm where nothing seems to be working out.

This is precisely the moment to seek divine intervention. Just as Jabez, in his pain, turned to God and found favor and obtained mercy, you can too. In this nine-day prayer plan, we’ll use the principles of the prayer of Jabez to guide our own prayers. We’ll intercede and make our requests known to God with faith, believing He will answer and grant you favor, just as He did for Jabez. Your victory is within reach.

We congratulate you on starting this plan and completing day one. As you prepare for day two, we’ll dive into the first prayer of Jabez. Feel free to fast along with us as you read the plan. God bless you!

Prayer Focus: Acknowledge your current struggles. Pray for the courage to seek God for transformation, believing that you can obtain mercy and grace in this time of need.

Daily Prayer: Heavenly Father, just as Jabez overcame his painful beginning, I pray for the courage to seek You today. I acknowledge the hardships in my life, and I ask for Your mercy and grace to transform my story into one of honor and faith. Amen.

Bible Verse:

  • “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’’ Hebrews 4:16
