The First Commandment declares, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3) It reminds us that God alone is to be worshiped, exalted, and reverently honored. Worshipping and serving anything other than the Almighty God is deeply unacceptable in His sight. Anything that takes His place in our hearts becomes an idol.
This commandment challenges us to examine our hearts and lives and ask: Who is truly the Lord of my life? What am I really worshiping and serving without even noticing? Even as followers of Jesus today, we may not build a golden calf like the Israelites (Exodus 32:1–3), yet we still struggle to keep God first. In our time, idolatry often appears in soft, hidden ways that call for prayerful attention.
The Idol of Self
We can easily place ourselves above God, trusting our plans more than His, insisting on control, or expecting God to fit into our agenda. When we refuse to surrender, we end up worshiping ourselves rather than the One who created us.
The Idol of What We Love Most
Good things: family, work, dreams, success, money, or even technology can become idols when they matter more to us than God. Every blessing is a gift from Him, but when our focus shifts from the Giver to the gift, our hearts and talents drift into idolatry.
Scripture warns us never to provoke the Lord’s anger by turning aside to false gods. Instead, we are called to seek His face, fix our eyes on Him alone, and worship Him in spirit and in truth.
Reflection: Let your focus be shifted towards God, don’t let your priority be towards other people or things. Recognize the power and holiness of God. Respect and revere His exclusiveness and rarity.
Daily Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we give You praise and honor. There is none like You, and Your name is above all names. Let us come to know You, Lord, that we may glorify and worship You and Your Holy name. Let all things be in submission to You and You alone. Help us to exalt You, to prioritize You over everything. Humble our spirits, Father, that we may receive an ability to submit to You, God, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
