God is the author of life, and every person is created in His image. The Sixth Commandment reminds us that “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13) is more than avoiding physical killing; it also addresses the anger and contempt that can harden our hearts toward others. This is a call to guard our hearts against anger and strive for reconciliation and peace.

The story of Cain and Abel shows us the destructive power of anger. Cain’s rage over God’s rejection of his offering led him to murder his brother (Genesis 4:6-8). The Lord’s response reminds us that shedding innocent blood cries out to Him for justice (Genesis 4:10) and brings consequences (Genesis 4:11-12).

Jesus invites us to live a different way of life. 

Walk in the fruit of the Spirit—gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:23).

Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger (James 1:19).

Learn from Jesus, who is gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29).

Reflection: Anger, when unchecked, can harden our hearts and can lead us to be hateful and resentful towards ourselves and others. Sometimes it can be hard not to be angry at people or things in life, especially when provoked. We want to look upon Jesus as an example of how to handle these situations, but also reflect on what He taught regarding anger, and how it takes a spiritual toll on our souls when we walk in anger.

Daily Prayer: Lord God, give us the strength to exercise self-control and the patience with those who may bring us to anger, that we can find a resolution that can remove the anger from our hearts. Help us carry the love that You showed through Your Son Yeshua, that we may not be tempted to sin in our anger. Holy Spirit, guide us and protect us; let us not give the devil a foothold in our day. In Jesus’ name, we rebuke any murderous spirit that may drive us to remain angry, or any spirit of provocation that provokes us to unrighteous anger, Amen.
