Jamaica is bracing for the aftermath that will result from the landing of Hurricane Melissa, which has strengthened to a category five hurricane, registering speeds of 165mph, setting a possible record for the strongest ever that will strike the island. The United States’ National Hurricane Center has issued warnings of catastrophic flooding, intense winds, and a storm surge from Melissa, approaching Jamaica, then Cuba, and the Bahamas. The government has warned that the whole island is under threat, requiring evacuations for people in vulnerable regions, including Kingston. Jamaica is expected to see 40inches of rain when Melissa lands, while Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which Melissa has already devastated, having killed four people, experienced flooding that sank hundreds of homes.
Let’s Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for the people of Jamaica, that they not only properly prepare for Hurricane Melissa, but also that they are able to get through all the potential disasters that may come their way from the hurricane. Holy Spirit, bring Your spirit of endurance and longsuffering upon the people so that they will go through the storm, believing and trusting in God to protect them, and to help them restore and recover any and everything that this storm may destroy or tear down. Jesus, we ask You in Your name, to tame the storm, that it may not be as powerful as the meteorologists have predicted it to be. Lord, have mercy on the people of Jamaica, that they may know Your love for them, and the mercy You have given them. Let Your blessings be upon them, and Your Holy Spirit cover them, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
“Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distress. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.”
~Psalm 107:28-29
