Jonah 2:5–6 is the most “claustrophobic” part of the story. He is at the “moorings of the mountains”—the very bottom of the world. But this is exactly where the Resurrection Power is most evident. When you are at your absolute lowest, you are at the exact starting point for God’s greatest miracles. This prayer shifts your focus from the “bars” to the “Bringer-up of Life.” The “weeds” wrapped around Jonah’s head were a shadow of the “thorns” wrapped around Jesus’ head. He wore the crown of your struggle so you could wear the crown of His life.
Let’s Pray
Lord Jesus, You are the Eternal God, existing before the mountains were formed (Psalms 90:2). I stand in awe of how You, the King of Glory, descended from heaven to reveal the Father’s heart. You chose to enter the “deep” for us, enduring rejection, mockery, and the thorns that wrapped around Your head like weeds. You were laid in the earth’s depths, and for a moment, it seemed the bars of death had closed behind You forever. Yet, just as You brought Jonah up from the depths, You rose from the pit of Sheol! You were trampled like a rose, but You rose as the King. Because of Your sacrifice, my life has also been brought up from the pit. When the waters of life surround me, and the “bars” of my circumstances feel permanent, I remind my soul that You have already broken the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron (Psalm 107:16). Who else deserves my praise? Who else could take Your place in my heart? I believe Your testaments above all else. By Your grace, I am no longer a slave to the deep, but a child of God and an heir of the promise. You have redeemed me with Your mighty arm (Psalms 77:15), and I will meditate on Your works and talk of Your deeds all the days of my life (Psalms 77:12). Let my life proclaim Your victory. I am forever free because You chose to be bound for me. May the whole earth sing praises to the King of Heaven who conquers the grave. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

“The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God.”
