Jonah 2:3–4 is the sound of a soul hitting rock bottom and finding the Rock. Jonah stopped complaining about the fish and started focusing on the Temple. This prayer is about intentional focus. You are declaring that your geography (being in the deep) does not change your theology (God is on His throne). By “looking again,” you are reclaiming your peace before the circumstances even change. The most powerful word in this passage is “Yet.” It is the pivot point. Practice saying “Yet” today. “I am overwhelmed, YET I will look to Him. I am tired, YET I will trust His strength.”
Let’s Pray
Dear Father God, I lift up my eyes to You. You are the Lord of the heights and the depths. I acknowledge that Your hand is sovereign, even when it weighs heavily upon me now. I confess that I have often strayed, pursuing my own pleasures and finding easier ways to follow. If floods surround me and if Your waves are passing over me, I will not curse You or surrender to despair (Job 2:9-10). I recognize that even in the “heart of the seas,” You are there. Though I may feel cast out of Your sight because of my many troubles, I refuse to stay in the darkness. I choose this moment to look again toward Your holy temple. Do not cast me away from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Instead, restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with Your gracious Spirit (Psalm 51:11-12). I know Your thoughts toward me are precious and numerous (Psalm 139:17), and I trust that Your discipline is a bridge back to Your heart. Hear my plea from Your holy dwelling place. Even if my flesh fades and my strength weakens, my heart yearns for You alone (Psalm 42:1). Answer me swiftly and redeem my life so that Your name may be magnified through my restoration. I lift my eyes from the waves and fix them upon the light of Your glory, trusting that the water cannot drown a soul that is anchored in You. O Lord, You are merciful as Your grace is sufficient now and forever. In the name of the risen King of Glory, Jesus my Lord, Amen.
