The Gift and the Responsibility
One of the most breathtaking truths in the entire New Testament is found in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Through the cross, a divine exchange took place. Jesus took our filthy rags of sin, and in return, wrapped us in His flawless righteousness. However, as this reflection beautifully points out, even though Christ has become righteousness for us, we still have a part to play. True grace is not an excuse for passivity; it is an invitation to partnership.
1. From Homeless to Homeowners: The Parody of the Clean House
Before we met Christ, we were spiritually homeless—wandering, exposed, and ruined by sin. The moment we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, everything changed. He didn’t just rescue us from the streets; He built a home within us.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19
Now that we have this home, it is our daily duty to care for it, tidy it, and keep it clean.
The Household of Faith
Our Position in Christ (The Foundation) -> Given freely by grace.
Our Daily Duty (The Housekeeping) -> Tidy up our thoughts, words, and habits to match the Holy Spirit living inside.
If you own a beautiful house, you don’t allow garbage to pile up in the living room. In the same way, because we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, we must actively sweep out dishonesty, unfaithfulness, and compromise.
2. Righteousness is Active Alignment
This provided a powerful, practical definition of what righteousness looks like in daily motion: living according to Christ.
It is not a stagnant status, but a lifestyle characterized by:
- Sound Worship: Worshiping God alone in truth and in spirit, refusing to bow to the modern idols of money, fame, or self-will.
- Pure Honesty: Being completely transparent, trustworthy, and full of integrity in all your ways.
- Total Faithfulness: Being dependable and true before both the Lord and the people in your life.
We cannot separate our love for Christ from our obedience to Him. Jesus Himself drew a straight line between the two: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
3. The Myth of the Independent Believer
A dangerous deception in modern faith is the idea that we can claim Christ’s righteousness while refusing to abide in His commandments. It sounds like this: “I love Christ, but I want to live my life my own way. I don’t want to depend on Him completely.”
This forgets the very covenant of salvation. The day we accepted Christ, we made a definitive decision to resign as the masters of our own lives.
The Lordship Exchange
The World’s Way: “My life belongs to me; I depend on my own strength.”
The Believer’s Way: “My life solely depends on Him. He is the Lord; I am the follower.”
To call Him “Lord” means He calls the shots. True righteousness is an ongoing, daily decision of total dependence on Jesus.
The Reward of the Pursuit
Righteousness is a path we must actively walk down every single day. When we choose to follow Him wholeheartedly, holding nothing back, the promise of Scripture is certain:
“He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.” — Proverbs 21:21
When you pursue His ways, you don’t miss out on life—you find the true abundance of it. You find the clean house, the quiet conscience, and the honor that only comes from a life well-lived in the shadow of the Almighty.
All glory and honor be to the One who created us, our Savior, and our Righteousness. Amen.
