The Parable of the Prodigal Son is found in Luke 15:11-32 that offers a powerful lesson on asking and receiving. It’s a tale of two sons who, in their own ways, both missed the mark.
The younger son asked his father for his inheritance and received it, but his intention was selfish. He took his wealth to a “far country” and wasted it all on “prodigal living,” squandering everything without a thought for the Giver. He represents those who pray to God for something, and when it’s granted, they forget God’s goodness and leave His presence, spending their blessings only on themselves.
The older son, on the other hand, was obedient and faithful, serving his father diligently for years. Yet, he never asked for anything. When his brother returned home, the older son became resentful, telling his father, “You never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends.” Luke 15:29. He was a hard worker who received nothing simply because he never asked.
The Two Sides of the Same Coin
Both sons illustrate a fundamental truth about our relationship with God.
The first son teaches us that asking with a corrupt heart leads to waste and emptiness. James 4:3 says, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”
The second son teaches us that failing to ask at all prevents us from receiving the blessings God has already promised. John 16:24 says, “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
The Father’s Heart
The father’s response to the older son reveals the heart of God: “Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.” Luke 15:31 NKJV
God’s blessings are not earned through hard work alone; they are freely given to those who are in relationship with Him. We have to learn to ask for what we desire, trusting that as we “take delight in the LORD,” He will “give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).
So, don’t be the one who asks with a selfish motive, nor the one who never asks at all. Approach God’s throne with a pure heart and a clear purpose. In this place, asking becomes a form of worship, and receiving becomes a blessing that multiplies, not one that is squandered.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, faithful and righteous are You, my Lord. Thank You for Your unconditional love and tender mercy, for I recognize that, like the Prodigal Son, I have often fallen short and been unfaithful with Your blessings. Yet, like the prodigal father, Your love and care for me remain steadfast. Lord, inspire me to be an obedient child who reveres Your name and holds a loyal heart. You know my wrongdoings; please forgive and correct me, that I may bring honor to You, for You are always right, and I am in need of Your guidance. Grant me the wisdom to present my requests with the right motives and bless me with a generous spirit, allowing me to share cheerfully and wisely all that I receive. Teach me Your divine management principles and help me become a good steward of all that You have entrusted to me. With all that I am and all that I possess, may my life be a testament to praise and serve You, returning everything to You, knowing that all comes from above. Honor and glory be to Your holy name forever and ever. Amen!
Bible Verse:
“Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’ “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’ “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’ “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”” Luke 15:11-32
