Jonah 4:5 shows the danger of being a spectator of God’s work rather than a participant in His heart. Jonah had preached the Word, but he hadn’t yet embraced the love behind the Word. This prayer is your Alignment with Grace. You are choosing to sit on the “east side” not to see judgment, but to be the first to witness the dawn of a new day for those around you. In the Bible, the East is often associated with the presence of God and the sunrise. Turn your face toward the “East” of God’s promises. No matter how dark the “city” looks, the sun of righteousness is rising with healing in its wings. Jonah built a shelter to keep himself comfortable while he hoped for someone else’s discomfort. Today, use your “quiet time” or your “shelter” as a place of intercession. Pray for the very people you find it hardest to love.
Let’s Pray
Awesome God, as the sun rises in the east, let the light of Your glory shine over me. I come to You seeking shelter, asking to be shaded by the shadow of Your wings. From my place of prayer, I look out at the world around me, asking for a heart that longs for salvation rather than destruction. Guard my eyes from evil and my heart from the desire to see others fail. Remove every trace of judgment from my soul, for I know that Your mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13). Father, I intercede for my city and my neighbors. As You did in Nineveh, may the fire of revival fall upon us as well, igniting a great awakening and filling us with the joy of salvation. O Lord, grant me a kind heart that desires only good for my land. Instead of watching for downfall, let me watch for repentance. I pray for the salvation of everyone—from the greatest to the least—asking that You would speak life into every home. You are the protector of our city and the fortress of our nation. I pray for those in authority, asking for Your wisdom to guide them. Let Your Word be my guiding principle: to love my neighbor as myself (Mark 12:31) and to do good to all. I cherish the gift of salvation, and I long for all to share in it. Let the “east wind” of Your Spirit sweep away wickedness and leave behind a harvest of hope. I resolve to love, pray, and serve You all my days. May I never be a stumbling block, but always a signpost to Your grace. Let Your goodness be revealed through me today. O God, let the prayer that I pray and my worship come up as a memorial before You. Almighty Father, Hallowed be Your name, Your dominion is forevermore. In the holy and compassionate name of Jesus, Amen.

“So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.”
