Divine Wisdom

The Ancient Warning

In the beginning, a single boundary was set for humanity’s protection: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). This was not a restriction of joy, but a safeguard against a burden we were never meant to carry. Today, that warning still resonates. When we reach for “knowledge” outside of God’s counsel (Proverbs 19:20-21), we invite a spirit of deception that brings disorder to our hearts and our nations.

The Great Substitution

We live in an era where the lines are intentionally blurred. The Prophet Isaiah warned of a day when society would swap the holy for the profane: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness” (Isaiah 5:20). When we feast on the “fruit” of self-definition and moral relativity, we find that what looked sweet is actually bitter, and what looked like enlightenment is actually a deepening darkness.

Wisdom from Above vs. Wisdom from Below

The Apostle James provides us with a clear “fruit test” to determine which tree we are feeding from (James 3:13-18):

  • Earthly Wisdom: This is driven by self-seeking and “bitter envy.” It is sensual and disruptive, leading to the confusion and “every evil thing” we see in global conflicts and broken relationships. It is the wisdom that leads to war.
  • Godly Wisdom: This descends from above. It is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and willing to yield. It is full of mercy and good fruits, operating without partiality or hypocrisy.

The Choice for Peace

Choosing to stop “eating from the tree of knowledge” means choosing to stop relying on our own understanding of right and wrong (Proverbs 3:5-6), and instead returning to the Word of God (Matthew 4:4, 2 Timothy 3:16). The fruit of righteousness is not found in winning arguments or exerting power, but is “sown in peace by those who make peace.” Today, let us lay down the “bitter fruit” of earthly wisdom and ask for the pure, peaceable wisdom that only comes from the Father. ”For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” ‭‭
