‘I can’t afford to save both twins’: Sudan’s war left one mother with an impossible choice

The BBC story “I can’t afford to save both twins” by Nawal Al-Maghafi and Scarlett Barter sheds light on the human toll of Sudan’s civil war through survival tales from Khartoum. They include Touma, a mother deciding whether to save her starving twin daughter or son; Zaher, a youth who lost his legs due to the explosion from an American drone attack but has hopes of playing football; and young Ahmed, clearing debris to earn the income to feed his family. Once a vibrant city full of life and color, Khartoum now confronts destruction upon its people due to hunger, sickness, and violence, destroying the family unit. In desperation, acts of hope continue to exist, witnessed through children’s giggles within makeshift classrooms and determination to survive and aspire.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, Your power is great, Your love is everlasting. In Yeshua’s name, I ask that You heal the hearts and minds of the people of Sudan, and put an end to the violence that spreads across the nation. We ask You, O Rapha, to heal the children of Touma, that You may provide them with the proper nourishment, so that they can no longer be hungry or thirsty, Lord. Let Your presence be upon them, that they may have solace in it. Jesus, I ask that You provide Zaher an opportunity to receive prosthetic legs, so that he may be able to walk again. Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name, let a spirit of hope and joy be given, not only to Ahmed, but also to all the children of Sudan, who have been affected by the traumas of the civil war, that have stolen their joy and hope for their futures. Let all that is prayed for be done in Your will, for Your glory, God. Let these people, and all the people of Sudan, come to the knowledge of You and Your word Lord. Let them witness Your magnificent power, that they may be given hope for the kingdom that is to come. And Lord, let all those contributing to the war and violence in Sudan, repent of these ways, and let all the spirits, powers, and principalities of evil and darkness that influence strife, war, conflict, and violence be cast out in the name of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, Amen.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
