The death toll from Friday afternoon’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake has quickly risen to 1600 in the south-eastern nation of Myanmar, which borders India. Majority of the country lies at a fault-line between the Indian-Australian plate and Eurasian plate, and the built-up pressure release of these tectonic plates causes earthquakes. The death toll is only expected to go up as widescale rescue efforts are underway to save people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings and other structures. Myanmar has been in a civil war since 2021, when the military took power in a coup. And the cruel war showing no respite to the afflicted, with bombs reportedly being dropped amidst the undergoing rescue efforts.

Father LORD, we pray and ask for peace and healing in the hearts of every person affected through loss in this natural tragedy. We pray for the quick rescue of those still trapped under debris and that You would lead the rescuers to them promptly. We also pray for lasting peace in this nation torn by the civil war that is happening. And that every Myanma would know the true rest found in You alone. In Jesus’ name, that saves. Amen.
