The 2026 World Cup has officially begun in Mexico City, marked by a vibrant, star-studded opening ceremony at the historic Azteca Stadium alongside targeted civil protests outside the venue. An 82,000-person capacity crowd witnessed a colorful opening ceremony showcasing traditional indigenous attire, a fireworks display, and a major performance by global icon Shakira. The ceremony also featured musical sets from J Balvin, Burna Boy, and a joint performance of the tournament’s anthem by Andrea Bocelli and K-Pop artist Ejae. Host nation Mexico successfully kicked off their tournament campaign on the right foot, securing a 2-0 victory over South Africa. Outside the Azteca Stadium, security forces clashed with radical protesters attempting to disrupt the event. A splinter group of roughly 200 masked individuals engaged with law enforcement, causing brief disruptions and the temporary closure of nearby metro stations before police brought the area under control. The tournament opener drew peaceful demonstrations as well. Groups of local teachers marching for higher pay, alongside families of individuals who have gone missing during Mexico’s ongoing drug war, held demonstrations outside the stadium to elevate their platforms while the eyes of the world are on the country. Mexico is co-hosting the 48-team tournament alongside the United States and Canada, both of which are scheduled to host their own localized opening ceremonies.
Let’s Pray:
Yahweh, God of all nations, peoples, and tribes, we look up to You, knowing exactly where our help comes from—our help comes from You, O God, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2). As the eyes of the world turn to North America for this tournament, we call upon You as the true Prince of Peace. We come on our knees, humbly asking You, O Lord, to intervene with Your heavenly security. For Your Word declares that except the Lord watches over the city, the watchman watches in vain (Psalm 127:1). Therefore, Lord, send down Your heavenly hosts—thousands of angels—to surround the cities, to watch over the venues, and to guard the people of Mexico, Canada, and the US today. Lord, be good to all, as You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. Keep everyone safe. Take ultimate charge and control, building a divine wall of fire to defend the innocent against any form of evil or violence that seeks to dominate. During this season of celebrations and tournaments around the world, we decree that terror and disaster will not prevail. We pray for the absolute safety of the millions of fans, families, and international visitors traveling through Mexico City and the other host hubs. Restrain the hands of those who seek to use this global stage for destruction, and grant supernatural wisdom, discernment, and alertness to the security forces and law enforcement officers keeping watch. Lord, You see the families and children who marched outside the gates—those who are grieving, weeping, and seeking answers for their missing loved ones. Defend their cries from the stadium’s roar. Comfort the brokenhearted, bring hidden injustices to the light, and bring deep, divine healing to a society scarred by cartel violence and corruption. We ask that this tournament be a season of joy, peace, and unity rather than civil unrest and darkness. Guide the hearts of local leaders and public workers toward fair, righteous resolutions, and let Your glory settle over the neighborhoods of Mexico City. Preserve and save our souls, Lord. We ask that no lives be lost and no one be injured during this tournament. Protect everyone as our Redeemer and Guardian. May Your spirit and love pour out upon everyone. May Your name be exalted through this season, and may many discover Your salvation now and forever. Thank you, God, for making the tournament a success. In Your powerful, authoritative, and comforting name, Jesus, Amen.

“If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;.”
