On Wednesday evening, June 24, 2026, north-central Venezuela was struck by a catastrophic “doublet” earthquake disaster, leveling buildings across the capital city of Caracas and triggering a massive national emergency. The back-to-back seismic events occurred just seconds apart, leaving behind extensive destruction and a rapidly climbing casualty count. A powerful 7.2-magnitude foreshock struck near the Caribbean coast town of Morón. Merely 39 seconds later, an even more violent 7.5-magnitude mainshock hammered the exact same region at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, amplifying the destruction. It is recorded as the largest earthquake to hit Venezuela since 1900. The shocks reduced dozens of residential and commercial high-rises to rubble, particularly in Caracas and the neighboring coastal city of La Guaira. Residents flooded frantically into the streets amid cascading concrete and heavy dust. Initial state statements confirmed over 164 deaths and more than 700 injuries. However, because communication networks, power grids, and roads to rural epicentral zones are entirely wiped out, international monitoring groups warn the final death toll could ultimately be significantly higher. Main public services are intermittent or completely non-functional. Structural damage at Simón Bolívar International Airport forced its immediate closure, halting standard transit. Secondary geological hazards, including severe landslides in mountainous corridors and soil liquefaction, are actively impeding rescue access. Venezuela’s executive leadership declared a national state of emergency, calling for absolute national unity. Neighboring nations including Colombia and Brazil, alongside the United States, have mobilized specialized disaster assistance and urban search-and-rescue teams to help dig survivors out of the rubble.
Let’s Pray:
O Lord, we humble ourselves under Your mighty hand, that You may lift the people of Venezuela up in this time of great disaster (1 Peter 5:6). Look down upon this nation, O God—are they not the work of Your hands? You who created the wind, the sea, and the mountains, arise now and rebuke the shifting earth! O God, say to this earthquake, “Peace, be still!” (Mark 4:39). Let the terrors of the wind, the fire, and the quaking cease, and let the nation hear Your still, small voice of comfort (1 Kings 19:11-13). For the sake of the righteous in the land, show pity and show mercy (Genesis 18:32). Behold, Your hand is not shortened that it cannot save, nor Your ear heavy that it cannot hear (Isaiah 59:1). Answer us speedily, Yahweh Ezri, our ultimate Refuge and ever-present help in times of trouble. We ask for a divine extension of life for every soul pinned beneath collapsed concrete. Guide search teams, O God, and rescue dogs directly to them through Your light, and grant rescuers physical endurance and absolute protection from aftershocks. Provide medical personnel with the supplies, strength, and wisdom to save lives. LORD, be close to the families weeping over lost loved ones and relieve those who are waiting in agony for news. Command the earth to return to its rest. We pray against further violent aftershocks. Calm the minds of the vulnerable sleeping in the streets, and give them help, break through blocked supply lines to bring clean water, food, and shelter instantly. Our Father, we pray for the safety of everyone affected, the restoration of peace in the land, and the rebuilding of what has been destroyed. Though the earth gives way and the mountains shake, reveal Yourself to Venezuela as the God of this nation and the Maker of this people, for You are the unshakeable Foundation of our hope and salvation. Selah! In Your mighty and sovereign name, Lord Jesus, Amen.
