Cyclone Gezani Devastates Madagascar’s Second-Largest City

On May 7, 2026, Madagascar’s disaster management authority released an updated toll showing that Cyclone Gezani has killed at least 35 people and left six missing after slamming into the eastern coastal city of Toamasina with winds up to 250 km/h. Authorities report that more than 8,800 people have been displaced, over 18,000 homes destroyed and 50,000 damaged or flooded, and large parts of the city left without power as fallen trees and debris block roads. Madagascar’s president appealed for international solidarity, saying up to 75 percent of Toamasina and its surroundings were “ravaged,” while humanitarian teams work through the night to clear streets and reach stranded residents.

Let’s Pray:

Lord Jesus, we lift up the people of Toamasina and the wider eastern coast of Madagascar in the wake of Cyclone Gezani. You see every family grieving loved ones, every person searching through rubble for shelter, and every child walking through flooded streets where homes once stood—have mercy on them, O God. Stretch out Your hand to protect those still in danger from unstable buildings, downed power lines, and contaminated water; give strength and safety to emergency crews and volunteers clearing debris, restoring electricity, and delivering aid to isolated neighborhoods. Provide secure shelter, food, clean water, and medical care for the thousands who have been displaced, and comfort those who feel overwhelmed by loss and uncertainty about the future. Stir the hearts of Madagascar’s leaders, neighboring nations, and the global community to respond quickly and generously, and empower Your church in Madagascar to be a beacon of hope—praying, serving, and pointing many to You as their stronghold in the storm. In Your mighty name, Jesus, Amen.

“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.”

Nahum 1:7 NKJV
