The power of focus is a common teaching taught by many motivational speakers on the subject of life goals. It is very true that someone who is focused on their goal and perseveres through set-backs will probably end up achieving their goals and be successful. If we can focus on an earthly goal and with nothing but our own strength and determination accomplish much, how much more so when we begin to focus solely on Jesus? Mountains will be moved, seas will be split apart, walls will begin to fall before us and victory will most certainly be ours. Alas, we are too caught up in the moment, our present circumstances or inabilities often dictating the outcome. We find ourselves more often than not, complaining, unbelieving, focusing on the past mistakes or could have beens’ in life, ungrateful, burdened and weary. The hope and invitation that Jesus offers in such a place is that when we cry out “Lord, save me!” God is faithful to lift us up and restore us (Joel 2:25-26).

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

God has called us to look upward in the race of life (Philippians 3:14) and to have an eternal perspective, for our reward is great in the kingdom of God. Today it begins with a simple step, asking ourselves: what distracts me from focusing only on Jesus? Is it fear? Is it uncertainty? Whatever it is, let us not fall short or waver in the faith that victory belongs to Jesus,  and press on towards our purpose in Christ, with our eyes transfixed on Him.
