Eternity is the goal

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-21

Many of us use this verse when discussing money, but treasure is where your heart is. How do you see things that are chased after by the world? Things such as wealth, fame, job, profession, career, acceptance, and the approval of others? Though they don’t necessarily become your idols. Jesus said not to store up for yourselves treasures on this earth. Whatever we have here on earth is finite. No matter how rich someone is, their money won’t follow them to the other side of the grave. People change their opinions toward you all the time. You may change jobs until you retire. Your time is not even in your hands.

Our lifetime here on earth is incomparably too short to the eternity that awaits us. However, everything that we do here on Earth has an impact on eternity. Considering our limited time, the many things we can only do on earth, and the impact all our actions have on eternity, what are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to invest the resources we have? What are the priorities we want to pursue here on earth?

Jesus told us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven. Will you choose to follow Jesus today and accept salvation from Him? Jesus is preparing a place for us so that we can be together with Him forever (John 14:2-3). Will your acts today secure your place in heaven? Will you follow His example and be His disciples here on earth? Will you choose to share what you have experienced, tasted, and seen in your walk with Jesus and be His witnesses? Will you give your life as an example to follow, as you follow Christ’s (1 Corinthians 11:1) ? Will you choose to love God by obeying His word? Will you choose to make disciples of Christ, baptize, and teach them everything Jesus has taught you? God has set eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11), will you choose our acts with eternity in mind? Will you invest your time, effort, money, and everything God has entrusted to your hands, into what really matters, not only in this life but until eternity? Will you choose to leave a legacy that will impact the lives of many people, not only around us but also around the lives of many people impacted by our lives, till many generations to come?
