A Psalm of Judgment and Restoration

I
The burden falls upon the ships of the sea;
The harbors of Tarshish are silent in waste.
Be still, O coastlands, you who traded in silver and grain;
For the sea declares its own strength, and the pride of man is revealed as dust.
II
The Lord Almighty has stretched His hand over the deep;
He has shaken the kingdoms and humbled the honorable of the earth.
He purposed to bring low the glory of the boastful
And to level the strongholds of the ancient and the proud.
III
“In forty days shall the city be overthrown!”
The harp sings a song of warning through the streets.
Yet look! The Lord has stayed His hand of disaster;
He has found the heart that turns, and the knee that bows in the ash.
IV
That which was gained in the market is now set apart for the Altar;
The wealth of the city shall feed those who dwell before God.
For the Lord our God is One; there is none greater than He,
Who turns the target of wrath into a vessel of grace.
V
May I remain humble and obedient to Your call,
Trusting the work You have placed in my hands.
As Nineveh found favor, let us see Your salvation today;
Let the heroes sing and the fallen rise to praise Your Name.
VI
The losers of yesterday are the winners of tomorrow’s Kingdom;
Take away our distress, O Lord, and fill this city with Your Spirit.
Comfort us with Your holiness and clothe us with the garment of praise.
Amen.

This Psalm reminds us that no city is too proud to be humbled, and no city is too fallen to be saved. Tarshish relied on its ships, and Nineveh on its strength—but both had to learn that true security is found only in the Lord. If you feel like you are under a “difficult burden” or facing a “forty-day” deadline of distress, remember that God specializes in showing mercy to the repentant. He can take a land that is “laid waste” and turn it into a sanctuary of “holy nation.”
