Migrants Die After Stranded Boat Rescue off Libya’s Coast

On April 30, 2026, the Libyan Red Crescent reported that a naval patrol boat rescued seven survivors and recovered 17 bodies from a migrant vessel that had drifted for eight days in the Mediterranean Sea after breaking down off Libya’s coast. Libyan security sources said at least 17 people died and nine others are missing following the incident, which unfolded in difficult sea conditions and required more than eight hours of continuous search‑and‑rescue work. Aid workers described the mission as one of their most arduous operations, and survivors are now receiving humanitarian assistance from the Red Crescent and UNHCR while authorities continue efforts to identify the dead and search for the missing.

Let’s Pray:

Lord Jesus, we bring before You the survivors and the families of all who perished on this stranded boat off the Libyan coast. You see every life lost in the waves, every loved one waiting for news, and every survivor carrying trauma and fear after eight days of distress at sea—have mercy on them, O God. Strengthen and protect the crews of the Libyan Red Crescent, coast guard, and all who risk their lives in search‑and‑rescue missions; give them courage, endurance, and compassion as they recover bodies and care for the living. We ask that survivors would receive dignified treatment, medical and psychological care, and safe pathways instead of exploitation or abuse, and that the nations involved would respond with justice and mercy rather than indifference. Stir leaders in North Africa, Europe, and countries of origin to address the conflicts, poverty, and persecution that drive people onto unsafe boats, and move Your church along these routes to welcome the stranger, defend the vulnerable, and bear witness to Your love. May many who feel forgotten discover that You are near to the brokenhearted and that nothing—not even the depths of the sea—can separate them from Your love. In Your mighty name, Jesus, Amen.

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 NKJV
