The Trump administration and Pope Leo XIV have divergent views on immigration and mass deportation.

A significant rift has emerged between Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration over immigration policy. While the American-born Pope and U.S. bishops have condemned mass deportation as “inhuman” and contrary to the “pro-life” cause, conservative Catholic supporters of the president argue the Church should “stay in its lane” and focus on spiritual salvation. This tension has created a deep “faultline” within the American Church. While the administration includes high-profile Catholics like Marco Rubio and JD Vance, it has publicly rejected the Vatican’s criticism. Politically, the government appears to be gambling that its support among white Catholics (60% approval) outweighs the concerns of the Vatican and the growing Hispanic Catholic population (30% approval).

Let’s Pray:

Merciful Father, God of Grace and Knowledge, we come before You today lifting up the leaders of both Church and State. We ask that You would be gracious to them; let them honor Your Word and not stand in opposition to one another or Your divine commandments. Guide every heart in the knowledge of Your precepts and the absolute truth of Your Spirit. Lord, we specifically ask for understanding between Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration regarding immigration policy. We pray for mature interest, divine insight, and a unity that can only be forged through the Holy Spirit. May Your Kingdom come and govern the governments of this world. Cause Your peace and salvation to wash over this nation. Lord, preserve the lives of the immigrants and foreigners. As they seek “greener pastures,” we ask that You make a way for them. Grant them a place of refuge and rest—a city whose foundation and builder is the Lord. Reign with compassion, justice, and righteousness in their lives. We declare that the spiritual realm controls the physical. We pray that the Enemy will not take advantage of this hour to sow confusion or desolation. For Your Word says:

“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” — Matthew 12:25

Father, if any policy does not align with Your will, let it be rooted out. If it is of You, let Your will be done. You are the Father to the immigrant, the Husband to the widow, and the Hope to the hopeless. Do not leave Your people stranded. Bring hope to this nation, and we will praise You forever for Your divine guidance and intervention. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!

Reflection: This prayer reminds us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The "tense relationship" between the Pope and the State is a call for the Church to pray harder, not to take sides in anger. We acknowledge that human borders are temporary, but God's Kingdom is eternal (Hebrews 11:10). When we pray for "mature interest and understanding," we are asking God to give our leaders the "mind of Christ" to solve complex human problems.

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”
