Ruth 1:13 is Naomi’s deepest valley. She feels completely responsible for the sorrow of her daughters-in-law and fully targeted by God. Yet the irony of the Book of Ruth is that the very hand she thinks is “against her” is now orchestrating Ruth’s arrival in Bethlehem, which will ultimately bring joy back into her empty vessel. This prayer is your Anchor in the Dark, declaring that even when you cannot see His face, you can trust His heart. Naomi asked if they would wait until the unborn sons were grown. Humans waiting can feel paralyzed and hopeless. But biblical waiting (“they that wait upon the Lord”) is an expectant, active posture that actually builds supernatural strength. In deep grief, it is easy to misinterpret our circumstances as God’s hostility. When life feels like it’s crashing down, remember that God’s discipline or allowance of trials is never a sign of hatred—His hand is always at work in a grander plan of redemption. Whenever you feel isolated or targeted by hardship, look to the cross. Jesus absorbed the full weight of the “hand of judgment” so that the only thing left for you to receive is the “hand of mercy.”
Let’s Pray
Holy Father of Israel, Your beauty, glory, and majesty are eternal. You are the Great Potter who shaped me in my mother’s womb and set me apart for Your holy purpose. Lord, when my body is weak and my flesh is weary, I look to You. Your Word promises that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31). Refresh my spirit today and extend Your favor to my life without restraint. Lord, I bring my grief and my mourning into Your presence. If ever I feel like Your heavy hand is pressing down on me or draining my vitality (Psalm 32:4), I ask that You remember mercy in Your anger. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me (Psalm 51:11). Deliver me from distress, and let Your grace exceed my many failings. Spirit of God, remind my heart today that Jesus Christ was afflicted and sorrowful even unto death on the cross so that I could be free (Mark 14:33-34). He cried out, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:45-46). so that I would never have to experience being abandoned by my Father. Because of His sacrifice, I know Your hand is for me and not against me. I lean on Your steadfast promise: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10). Grant me the grace to stay spiritually awake, active in Your will, and working until Your return. Currently, I have no other possessions than You, O Lord. Hold my hand tightly and never let me go. I rest safely in Your arms all my days, finding permanent peace and comfort in Your unfailing love. In the name of Jesus, my Chief Cornerstone, Amen.
