The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing an unprecedented health crisis following a new declaration of an Ebola outbreak. The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has warned that the virus is outrunning international containment efforts. Two weeks into the official declaration, the speed and volume of the infection have left health agencies struggling to grasp the true magnitude of the crisis. MSF Deputy Director Dr. Alan Gonzales stated that never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so quickly. The response on the ground has “not yet caught up” to the rapid spread of the epidemic. There are already more than 1,000 suspected Ebola cases and at least 246 deaths in the DRC, primarily centered in the eastern province of Ituri. The virus has breached international borders, with neighboring Uganda already reporting nine confirmed cases and one fatality. Due to overwhelming strain on local infrastructure, hundreds of medical samples remain untested. As a result, officials admit that “nobody knows the true scale and severity” of the outbreak as new suspected cases emerge daily. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, arrived in Ituri on Saturday to personally oversee the deployment of virus containment protocols.
Let’s Pray:
O God, You are the Chief Guardian, the Chief Protector, and our Chief Judge. Lord, watch over Your nations—the land of Congo, the peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda—as they face the terrifying and rapid spread of the Ebola virus. How can they who call upon Your name transgress against You, O Lord? We therefore ask You, Father, to have mercy on us and to redeem us. You are Yahweh Ezri, the Lord our Helper. Do not be far from helping us, and do not distance Yourself from Your people on this day of calamity. You see every family keeping vigil over a sick loved one, every healthcare worker stepping into the hot zone, and entire communities gripped by fear. For the sake of the righteous in the land, we cry out, Abba Father, give help and save! Let Your hand reach down to deliver. Send forth Your angels; do not delay the aid You have already assigned to them, and do not abandon the innocent. O Lord, speak forth Your word and let this Ebola virus dry up like water. Send down Your consuming fire to burn out every trace of this plague from the soil and the air. Keep the healthy in good health, and completely restore those who have been infected. Stretch out Your hand to restrain the transmission of this disease. As the Chief Protector, we ask for supernatural protection over the borders, towns, and families, so that the spread would be abruptly halted. As the Chief Guardian, pour out physical endurance, mental clarity, and spiritual courage upon the doctors and nurses of MSF, the WHO, and local clinics. Protect them from infection, and provide the resources needed to clear the backlog of untested samples. And as the Chief Judge, condemn this evil plague and destroy its power in the land. Grant Dr. Tedros and the local health officials absolute wisdom as they coordinate isolation centers and treatment protocols. Soften the hearts of the communities to trust in God’s knowledge, to receive sound medical guidance, and to cooperate fully with containment efforts. In a region already weary from conflict and hardship, let Your peace settle over Ituri province. Guard the minds of the vulnerable against despair and panic. O God, may Your kingdom be established, and let Your salvation come upon these nations now and forever. In Your mighty and powerful name, Jesus, Amen.
